What to Wear for Your Boudoir Photo Shoot

So you've booked your boudoir session!

Now the biggest question looms in your mind...what to wear to your boudoir photo shoot? A common mistake many make when planning their boudoir session is thinking that boudoir is only one thing: matching lingerie sets.  This is not the case at all!  Your boudoir session should be all about YOU first and foremost.  You should feel completely comfortable in what you're wearing (unless you're going for the uncomfortable stuff) and it should make you feel sexy!  Don't feel like you have to fit yourself into the box of what most people are doing for their boudoir sessions.  BE YOU!  Whether that means going all out for the full lingerie set, garter belt, stockings and high heels or simply barefoot with cotton undies and a t-shirt.

The focus of your session should be you, not your wardrobe or props.  Keep patterns to a minimum as they can be distracting.  Bright colors can be as well, but sometimes bright colors truly fit certain personalities. It all depends on you. Your outfits will determine the look and feel for your session, so keep that in mind when you're choosing.  Do you want your session to feel more dark and mysterious, or would you prefer light and airy?  If you feel like you have multiple facets of your personality consider doing multiple sessions and changing the hair and makeup as well. If you're planning on purchasing prints or canvases for your home, consider the colors in the rooms where you want to hang things.  Choose colors that will compliment your decor.  (and make sure to measure your wall space before your session!)

Let's dive into some wardrobe options:

Matching set

The matching lingerie set is one of our most common wardrobe options.  You can't go wrong with matching bra and panties, and they come in endless options.  Solid black /white is classic and timeless.  The most important consideration for the matching set is to make sure it fits right.  That goes for everything on this list, actually.  If you go a size down from what you should wear, it will create bulges under the bra band and around the underwear band.  I've never met a woman who has referred to the "muffin top" affectionately, so be sure it fits right!  If you're not sure, ask an associate to measure you.  Click here for our blog and a video on getting the proper fit.

Chemises & Baby-dolls

The chemise and babydoll are great options for those who are concerned with the midriff section... which is probably the majority of us.  They can be incredibly sexy but still give you that comfort of feeling covered.  It's not always about the "less is more" motto, it's about what you feel good in. Slips fall under this category as well, if you need extra support consider a shape-wear slip.

Corsets & Bustiers

Again, for those concerned with the midriff section, corsets and bustiers can be your best friend!  They cinch in your waist helping to create the curves you want.  The one down side to corsets is also the benefit, they're incredibly tight!  This makes some poses difficult, as well as breathing.  Corsets can also flatten out your chest making you look smaller up top.  This is where bustiers really shine, they have cups that enhance your cleavage while still cinching your waist.  There are also cup-less options for those of you who are going for more risque photos as well as waist cinches.  You can find great quality corsets at Bonjour Lingerie in New Orleans.  Jill, one of the owners, also makes custom corsets if you want a corset that fits you like a glove.

Your Man's Clothes

If you doing your session as a gift for your man, you could bring something of his to add a personal touch.  The button down dress shirt and tie combo has become incredibly popular.  Shirts that are larger than the size you would normally wear work best so that you can have the shirt off your shoulders and still pull it all the way around you.  You can also try thinking outside of the box.  Does he have a favorite band shirt?  Pajama pants?  Trousers and suspenders?  Get personal!

T-Shirts & Sweaters

One of my favorite things that clients bring in, which may sound crazy, is a big t-shirt that hangs off the shoulder.  T-shirts are the exception to the "no prints" rule, the ones with big graphics or words on them photograph really well.  Pairing a t-shirt or tank top with a bra and panty set, or just cotton undies, is a great way to slink into the next set with a little strip tease!

Accessories

We're pretty much minimalists when it comes to accessories.  It's easy to overwhelm your look with over-the-top jewelry in addition to an elaborate outfit.  Be careful when pairing your accessories with outfits taking care not to go overboard.  If you're wearing a big, chunky necklace, smaller earrings may be better.  If you're a fashionista and never leave the house without being fully accessorized then go for it!  But if you don't typically wear a lot of jewelry don't feel like you have to go out and buy some for your session. Fur coats (real or fake) and masks can be a lot of fun for a session. If your boudoir photos will be a gift to your groom on your wedding day, you can bring in your veil as an accessory.  While some outfits definitely call for the finishing touches of accessories, some accessories definitely call out to be the only thing on you in the photo.

Nothing at all!

Truly one of my favorites, the birthday suit!  Don't worry though, just because you're completely nude in the photos doesn't mean you have to show everything if the thought of that terrifies you.  We can wrap you in a sheet and only show what you want, or you can go all out!  How much you show, or don't show, is completely up to you.  A lot of clients have told us that the nude portion of their session was the most liberating part!  Artistic nudes can be a great way to focus on capturing your femininity in a beautiful and timeless way.  Our fine art nudes make great additions to home decor!  If you're interested in fine art nude prints or canvases for your home, be sure to let us know in advance so that we can shoot for wall art.  And again, don't forget to measure your wall space before your session!

If you have any questions at all about what to wear for your session, please don't hesitate to give us a call!  We would be more than happy to discuss your wardrobe options and the look you're going for.  The more prepared you are for your session, the better.  Typically we photograph up to 3 outfits or sets, but we recommend bringing a couple extra outfits just in case.

Our "rut" and a SMOKING hot Lafayette Boudoir Session!!!

©2013 Breathless Boudoir | Jen & Max TromblyNo matter what job it is that you work, or what you do in life, from time to time everyone experiences getting caught in a rut.  Well, Max and I recently found ourselves in that rut.  It happens to the best of us, yes, but we're not allowed to not rock all the time!  We have a job to do and we take it very seriously.... making women feel sexy!  We were getting bored with our studio and shooting the same stuff all the time.  We needed a change, some inspiration, that little UMPH that sparks the life into us and makes us do what we do. You see, the problem was... well... this is somewhat embarrassing for a boudoir photographer to admit.... ahem.  Well, we were... too timid.  There, I said it.  Ridiculous, right?!  I know, I thought the same thing.  We pride ourselves at making our clients' comfort our top priority.  We never.... ever ever ever... want to make a client feel uncomfortable at any point during a session.  Our clients put a great deal of trust in us and it's a huge honor for us to be chosen as someone's boudoir photographer because it's a sensitive genre of photography.  Somewhere along the lines we became overly cautious and stopped shooting photos that pushed the limits of sexy.  Our work became *gasp* tame!!!  Tame to us, at least.  We like to push boundaries from time to time. We knew some of our clients really wanted to create photos to make their husband's mouth drop open, photos that were seriously hot and steamy.  But we failed to differentiate which clients wanted what... there's so many things we can do with boudoir so we just played it safe.

Moving forward.  We implemented some changes and all of a sudden WHOA!!!  Our work got A LOT steamier!  One of the changes we made was a pre-session questionnaire asking clients a series of questions to get to know them better, and to determine what kind of session they want to do.  Questions asking what degree of undress they are comfortable with helps us know how far to push.  One question in particular has changed everything.  The question is "Is there a certain look you are going for?  For example; more anonymous shots, portraits, detail and closeup body shots, smiling & playful, seductive, tastefully erotic, black & white, etc.  We're going to get a variety, but this helps us to know what you're looking for".  I knew from the very first questionnaire we received that it was a game changer.  It allowed us to know how far to go.  You can never guess what someone wants, women surprise us all the time!  We shoot a variety of styles, not everyone fits in the same box.  Some women want glamorous, some want playful, others want sultry, and some even tastefully erotic.

This brings us to Nicole.  She was the life raft we needed to get us out of our rut.  First off, her session took place in Lafayette, Louisiana.  One of our favorite locations to shoot at!!!  So we were already super excited and inspired.  We love getting out of the studio for a change of scenery.  Nicole let us know that she was looking for some tastefully erotic photos.  Jackpot!  We knew this was our perfect opportunity to see if we could do it.  Max and I pumped ourselves up on the way to the session saying that we would create the images that we wanted to create without worrying about going to far because we knew what Nicole's limits were.  From the moment we met her til the moment she left, it was pure magic. We were able to explore things that we haven't been able to with clients before.

Here are the images to show you exactly what I mean.  I'm warning you though, they're pretty steamy!

An amazing boudoir session with Emily!

Before and after makeover transformation©2013 Breathless BoudoirThis is Emily.  She is an absolutely amazing person and probably one of my favorite people I've ever met.  She's a full time mom to her adorable little girl, Emma.  Sometimes being a mom can take over a woman's time leaving no time for herself.  Emily came to us for her 30th birthday.  She wanted to feel beautiful again, and she wanted to scratch off a boudoir photo shoot from her bucket list.  She also wanted to give her husband an album as a gift, so it was a win win win situation. Here's what Emily had to say about her session,

Jen and Max,

I just wanted to say to both of you again how much FUN I had today, and how much I appreciate your professionalism, attention to detail and most of all your talent. Your work truly does speak for itself, and I noted that when I first came across your website. I felt amazing today-not just the way I looked in the photos, but the way I felt alive and beautiful and confident on the inside. That is a priceless feeling that I won't soon forget.  I can't wait to see the book and give it to my husband. What a shocker of a gift!!! Thank you both from the bottom of my heart for an amazing experience, and I am totally sending my mom to you guys ;)

P.S. Apparently I was unofficially the "least likely" of any of my girlfriends to do a boudoir session, as my reactions have been mostly "what? YOU??" hahaha. I made them all promise to call you guys if they decided to do a session!

Boudoir session for a wedding gift!

Before and after makeover ©2013 Breathless BoudoirRachel was getting married and wanted something unforgettable to give her groom on the wedding day.  There really isn't a better gift to give a groom than a book full of his beautiful bride who he is about to commit the rest of his life to.

Rachel did some fine art nude black and white photos to hang on her wall as well as some sassy other sets.

Here's what Rachel had to say about her Breathless Boudoir experience,

There is only one word that I can use to describe Jen and Max… AMAZING! I had such a wonderful time during my boudoir session. Jen and Max were so professional and made me feel so comfortable the minute that I walked in the door. The hair and makeup team were awesome and transformed me from plain/no makeup to glamorous Hollywood bombshell. I was nervous in the beginning, but both Jen and Max really set the tone and made things so much fun. I loved their energy and competitiveness that they had together throughout the shoot, constantly competing for who would have the best photo and the comments about how good they were turning out during the shooting was definitely entertaining and exciting. During the whole shoot I kept saying to myself “I want to see!!!!” and they would give me little sneak peeks here and there, but man was I surprised when we reviewed the pictures together at the end. The photos were absolutely stunning and I could not believe that they were me! Needless to say, I loved everything so much I ended up spending way more than I originally planned to spend. These photos aren’t just boudoir photos, they are works of fine art that any person would be proud to hang in their home, I know I can’t wait to hang my photo in my bedroom!  Thank you Jen and Max for creating a one of a kind gift for my husband to be, I know that he is going to love it!!!

Fishnet bodysuit and a white sheet... oh my!

Charmaine's boudoir session took place in our Baton Rouge studio.  She was a riot to work with!  We had so much fun for her session I never wanted it to end!  She is a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart and lovely curves.  She brought some great outfits including a fishnet bodysuit (take note ladies!) a loose purple blouse and a sheet.  Wait... that last one doesn't quite count as an outfit unless you're an ancient Roman.  Nonetheless wearing nothing but a white sheet makes a GORGEOUS set of photos for boudoir!  She did some implied nude as well as nude photos and I don't think I could be any more in love with them! before and after boudoir transformation  ©2013 Breathless Boudoir©2013 Breathless Boudoir©2013 Breathless Boudoir  ©2013 Breathless Boudoir ©2013 Breathless Boudoir ©2013 Breathless Boudoir©2013 Breathless Boudoir

Bra Fitting 101

As boudoir photographers we see a lot of undergarments.  A LOT.  Soooo we have an pretty good idea of what works best for photo sessions and what doesn't.  The number one problem that we see with lingerie is FIT!  8 out of 10 women wear the wrong bra size.  If something is not fitted properly it doesn't give you the support you need in the right places.  You either have a muffin top or your bottoms are loose and baggy (which is not flattering in the least!).  Your cups runneth over and (heaven forbid) there's the dreaded back fat, or there's a canyon sized gap between the bra and your breast. The most common mis-fit we see is items that are too small.  Trust me, I get it, we all want to fit into that smaller number or size!  The problem is you're doing yourself a disservice.  If your clothes don't fit you properly, then you end up looking larger than you actually are due to the bulges. Something for small chested ladies to look out for is if you want to get a bra with padding to give the ladies an extra perk, make sure the cup size is correct!  Often times ladies come in with stiff, padded bras that are slightly too big so when the breasts settle down into the cups there is a gap between your breast and the bra.  This is especially a problem during a boudoir session when we shoot from angles above your head.  Honestly, padding isn't necessary and a lot of times you will end up looking sexier just wearing a bra that goes with your natural shape (we can help with cleavage, trust me ;)

"Another issue with fit that we see is just a basic all around wrong size bra. If ladies aren't wearing their proper bra size then their boobs are not getting the right amount of support. Often we help a woman go down a bandwidth size and go up a cup size. Sometimes even a few cup sizes. One clue that your bra isn't fitting right is that your band is sliding up your back. Huge no no." - Bonjour Lingerie

I highly recommend heading over to Bonjour Lingerie in New Orleans on Magazine St.  Their selection varies from practical to super sexy, as well as super sexy practical!  The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable, they can get you fitted in the right lingerie with ease.  If you are planning on doing a boudoir session, don't skip this step!  Tell them you're doing a Breathless Boudoir session and you'll get a discount.

This video shows a simple tutorial to follow on sizing yourself.  You can visit the website HERE for more information. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoqXCnYOwCI?rel=0&w=640&h=360]

WARNING: This post is extra spicy!

Meggan was another (very exciting) addition to the "Breathless in New Orleans" special.  Her session was extra hot!  Think 50 Shades of Grey, but even hotter! I'll just let the photos speak for themselves...
