Oh, Virginia! - Charlottesville Boudoir Photography

Oh Virginia, How I love thee!Your beautiful winding roads and roadside views. Your passion for covering the roadsides with flowers that bloom throughout the spring, summer and fall. Your mountains, who call my name every. single. day. The rivers that wind through you, and beckon for me to dip my feet inside to cool down on hot days. Oh Virginia, My heart is yours. You've allowed the woman I am to fly with wings kept behind me for so long. This beautiful state of yours is perfect in so many ways. But the most important, is that you feel like home. Thanks for being such a welcoming home.

Now with that being said, here are a few photos from a wonderfully inspiring boudoir session I photographed recently.  Nothing sings to my heart, like spending time with you beautiful women, one day at a time, and diving into the world that is your sensuality and beauty.

Picking up where we left off last week... ©2014 Breathless Boudoir | Jen & Max Trombly

This was our "home" for the night, tents around a fire under the Milky Way.  What more could I ask for?  My heart was content.  Had I known that things would only get better in the morning, I may have exploded as soon as the Milky Way showed up to our camp.  Not even kidding, spontaneous combustion on the spot.  But alas, the next morning was mind blowing.

We woke up at the crack of dawn.  No, that's not even true.  We woke up BEFORE the crack of dawn to be sure that we were up in time for when the sun awoke from it's slumber.  If you know me at all, you know I'm not a morning person.  At. All. For some strange reason, just like I'm able to hang over a cliff with my camera in my hands, I'm also able to bounce out of bed (or in this case my tent) at ridiculous hours when there's photos to be made.  Give me fog in a field and a beautiful woman to photograph and I'm awake!  And that's exactly what I had to work with.

Like I mentioned last week, Max and I will be officially expanding Breathless Boudoir to Charlottesville, Virginia in April.  We're booking Virginia boudoir sessions now.  Our studio will be based in Charlottesville and we'll be traveling to the surrounding areas including Arlington, Richmond, Roanoke, and Washington, D.C. frequently.  When we do sessions in those areas they will take place in boutique hotels as well as in client's homes.  We're looking forward to doing more outdoor fine art photography sessions like this one as well!

Don't worry Louisiana, we still have session available before we leave, AND we'll be back in June!  We're not going to leave you guys hanging!

Hanging over a 50 ft. cliff, toes curled around the edge of the rock, my creativity flowed as freely as the river below.  Charlottesville, Virginia officially has my heart!  I really wish I could have snapped a behind the scenes photo of what it took to capture the gorgeous photo above!  It was Louise's idea to be in the water while I photographed her from above.  I'm not going to lie, just the mention of that idea had me a bit queasy.  I'm not exactly afraid of heights, but they're not my best friend either.  I love relishing in beautiful views from the tops of mountains, I just don't want to hang my toes over the edge.  When we scouted the location the day before she showed me the spot she had in mind.  I climbed up to the top to see if I could make it happen, and I couldn't really make myself get as close as I need to get a shot of the water without getting the cliff in the shot.  "Oh boy" I thought, "this is going to take some guts."  I had it in my mind that it may not work at all.  The next day after we had been shooting for a while and totally in love with everything we were getting.  It was time to try the water shot.  Louise and her husband had an idea to keep me safe.  I was going to "wear" her tripod case across my chest and her husband was going to hang on to the strap to stabilize me.  I'll have you know that the second I stepped up to the edge and saw Louise floating in the water with the fabric around her I completely forgot that I was afraid.  I went right up to the edge and hung over as much as physics would allow.  Even my toes were over the edge!  Something about having the camera in my hands and inspiration right in front of me made me feel invincible!  I "oooooed and ahhhed" with every shot.  And Louise was such a trooper!  Did I mention how cold the water was?  Buuurrrr!!!  It was quite chilly, especially for this Louisiana girl!  Time and time again she would swim upstream and spread the fabric out, letting the stream carry her through the frame of my camera.  I get chills just thinking back on that day.  Such perfection.  I love being inspired by nature and femininity!

We shot photos until it got too dark to shoot, then we set up camp and hung out around a fire.  This, by the way, is my idea of an absolutely perfect day!  Making gorgeous photos and camping!  I about died when I realized that the Milky Way Galaxy is visible with the naked eye from where we were camped.  Oh. My. God.  So humbling.  I couldn't miss taking a photo of it.  But I'm going to save that, as well as the next day's gorgeous photos, for next week!  Make sure to subscribe to the blog so you don't miss it!  Check us out on Facebook as well!

In just a few months Max and I will be more than thrilled to the Charlottesville Virginia Boudoir Photography that knocks people's socks off!  We're already booking session in April and May.  Our studio will be based in Charlottesville and we'll be traveling to the surrounding areas including Arlington, Richmond, Roanoke, and Washington, D.C. frequently.  When we do sessions in those areas they will take place in boutique hotels as well as in client's homes.

Fine Art Photography!

Max and I have been yearning to get back to our roots for some time now.  We both started in fine art photography using mostly black and white film and concentrating on the nude figure.  Recently we exploded with inspiration and took some old, expired Black & White film out of our refrigerator (that's where you keep film for extended periods of time, or the freezer) and did a nude session with a dear friend of ours.  Shooting with film is a completely different experience than shooting with digital cameras.  For one, film makes you stop and think about each and every shot you take, rather than shooting a ton of shots until you get what you're looking for.  There's no checking the back of the camera to see if the shot you just took is what you wanted, so you have to set it up perfectly, being meticulous about exposure and composition.  It takes a lot more focus (both on the photographer's part as well as the camera, since this was a manual focus camera) for a nude photo session with film.  You must pay attention to every single detail in the image, from the model's fingertips to her toes, and every part of the background as well to make sure there's nothing distracting in your shot.  If you missed a detail, you won't find out until at least a week later when your film comes back from developing!  Unless you can develop the film yourself, which Max and I plan on doing when we move to Charlottesville.  Setting up our own darkroom is on top of our priority list for our new Virginia studio!  I couldn't be more excited!

This is the camera we used for this shoot.  It's a Nikkormat camera from the 70's with a manual focus lens.  The focus is really tricky to get, which is why some of the images are soft.  The expired film also makes the images a bit soft, which I actually like for fine art nudes because it gives them a more dreamy effect and doesn't show sharp details. fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_02 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_03 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_04 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_05 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_06 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_07 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_08 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_09 fine_art_nude_film_blackwhite_01

This is just the beginning of new adventures for Max and I!  Our creative momentum is picking up and I don't foresee it slowing down for quite a while, so be sure to subscribe to our blog to jump onboard this magical train of creativity!

I can't even describe the sound I made when I took the first shot on the "new" set of black on black.  It was somewhere between a gasp, a squee and a moan.  It was barely audible, but she heard it.  Then I had to explain myself.  "I'm sorry, I don't know what that noise was... I'm just really excited about this!"  There were sporadic gasps and "Ooohhhh my god!!!" throughout the rest of the shoot.  And laughing.  Yes, lots of laughing. The whole setup of using our black backdrop with black sheets on a bed was actually Max's idea, but he loves me so he let me shoot it when he saw how excited I was (like a kid on Christmas morning).  Throughout the whole first set I continued to coo and moan at how smooth her skin looked against the stark black sheets and backdrop, and how amazing the contrast was.  What I like most about this style is that the woman is the main focus, nothing else in the photo matters.  Your eyes are drawn to her and everything else falls off into the background.  Love I tell ya, this is love!!!

We could not have asked for a better client to test things out on than Jamie.  She was willing to try anything and was patient as we were testing new territories. She also brought her own ideas!  Her and her husband love to read together, so she brought a bunch of books.  She brought an apple and was telling us that she has a thing for apples.  When we were deciding what outfits to shoot we said we would do a nude set with the apple and she agreed to it.  It wasn't until later that we found out she brought the apple as a snack, not a prop!

Here is what Jamie had to say about her experience:

"I was nervous in the beginning - of course, but, again, I was surprised how comfortable I was hanging out in all my glory. You have a lot of direction, so you kind of forget why you are there. Nothing felt forced. Jen and Max were extremely professional and pleasant to be around. I was in shock to see my photos in the end; they were amazing. I felt like we were able to create something together - as a team."
